Overview

Enduring Material: Human Trafficking Series

Enduring Material: Human Trafficking 101 & 201 is a certified continuing education course designed to equip the healthcare team with the critical knowledge and skills necessary to identify, differentiate, and respond effectively to human trafficking cases within healthcare settings.

Aligned with the TTUHSC CME Mission, this interprofessional activity focuses on addressing professional practice gaps regarding the widespread nature of both labor and sex trafficking, vulnerabilities in diverse populations, and reproductive, sexual, and mental health considerations. Participants will learn to distinguish trafficking from smuggling, implement trauma-informed care strategies to improve trust and communication, and maintain strict HIPAA compliance when reporting cases.

This course satisfies the Texas Medical Board requirements mandating the completion of an HHS-Approved Human Trafficking course and qualifies for Ethics Credit. Developed for the entire healthcare team—including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, psychologists, and social workers—this course fosters a collaborative learning environment through an enduring lecture and discussion format to ultimately improve patient outcomes.


Objectives

After this enduring material, the participant should be able to


  1. Define “human trafficking” in terms that could affect healthcare
  2. Recognize 2 main types of human trafficking
  3. Differentiate between human trafficking & smuggling
  4. Discuss risk factors for being trafficked
  5. Identify vulnerable populations & risk factors
  6. Discuss limitations of human trafficking data
  7. List key legislation impacting human trafficking
