Overview

Fatigue and Professional Responsibility

Fatigue and Professional Responsibility is an enduring, interprofessional continuing education activity designed to address a critical, often overlooked gap in healthcare: the inability of providers to recognize and manage the effects of their own fatigue and sleep deprivation on patient care.

Grounding its content in established professional guidance—such as the American Society of Anesthesiologists Statement on Fatigue—this course explores how fatigue compromises cognitive and physical capabilities, leading to decreased decision-making accuracy, impaired skills, and diminished communication safety. Learners will explore the direct relationship between provider well-being and clinical outcomes, gaining actionable strategies to optimize patient safety and team efficiency.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to

  1. Describe the effects of fatigue on healthcare providers' performance and explain how it negatively affects patient outcomes.
  2. Modify behavior in both personal and professional life in order to reduce fatigue, thereby improving patient safety.
  3. Describe collaborative methods for healthcare teams to support fatigued members, thereby increasing patient safety.

Accreditation

In support of improving patient care, Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
