Psychopharmacology: Common Psychotropics for Maternal Mental Health Conditions - Year 1

This interprofessional PeriPAN session was converted from a live webinar into an enduring material to provide continued access to evidence based education on psychotropic medication use during pregnancy, postpartum, and lactation. The session reviews medications used to treat depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Faculty discuss the Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Rule, maternal and fetal risks, neonatal effects, breastfeeding considerations, medication monitoring, and the potential consequences of untreated maternal mental illness. Through a clinical case involving a pregnant patient who is stable on paroxetine, learners consider how to evaluate medication risks and benefits, counsel patients, and make evidence based treatment decisions. The session emphasizes individualized risk versus risk versus benefit discussions and maintaining effective treatment while protecting maternal, fetal, and infant health.

1. Review the psychopharmacology of common psychotropic medications.
2. Discuss psychotropic medications used to treat common mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, OCD, and schizophrenia.
3. Explore the potential risks and benefits of psychotropic medications in perinatal populations.
4. Identify evidence based prescribing practices during pregnancy and breastfeeding using the Pregnancy and Lactation Labeling Rule.
5. Collaborate with members of the interprofessional healthcare team to provide consistent, evidencebased counseling and treatment recommendations regarding psychotropic medication use during pregnancy and lactation.

After registering, select My CME from the menu, then select Tests to access the pre-test, educational video, post-test, and evaluation. Learners must complete all required components to receive credit.
