Supportive Strategies for Nutrition, Weight Concerns, and Hyperemesis Gravidarum in the Perinatal Period - Year 1

This interprofessional PeriPAN session was converted from a live webinar into an enduring material to provide continued access to education on eating disorders, body image concerns, and hyperemesis gravidarum during pregnancy and postpartum. The activity reviews anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder, pica, body dysmorphic disorder, and the relationship between eating disorders and psychiatric, metabolic, reproductive, and obstetric conditions. Faculty discuss risk factors, screening tools, pregnancy trajectories, reproductive complications, postpartum concerns, and the effects of eating disorders on maternal and infant health. The session also examines hyperemesis gravidarum as a distinct and potentially severe condition, including its genetic and biological basis, mental health effects, treatment considerations, and areas of overlap with eating disorders. Learners are provided with strategies for identifying high-risk patients, using evidence-based screening tools, discussing weight and body changes sensitively, and coordinating care among mental health professionals, obstetric clinicians, nurses, dietitians, nutritionists, and maternal-fetal medicine specialists.

1. Identify evidencebased interventions that address the intersection of mental health symptoms and nutrition during pregnancy and postpartum.
2. Discuss disordered eating, body image concerns, and weight expectations during the perinatal period.
3. Describe the relationship between hyperemesis gravidarum and mental health symptoms.
4. Apply patient centered, trauma informed communication strategies when discussing weight and nutrition with perinatal patients.
5. Collaborate with members of the interprofessional healthcare team to screen, refer, and coordinate care for perinatal patients with disordered eating, body image concerns, nutritional needs, or hyperemesis gravidarum.
