Overview

Human Trafficking 101 and 201 is an HHSC-approved Human Trafficking Prevention Training course designed for the interprofessional healthcare team. This activity provides foundational and applied education on human trafficking, including definitions, types of trafficking, vulnerable populations, risk factors, documentation considerations, data limitations, and key legislation. The course also addresses how human trafficking may present in healthcare settings and provides trauma-informed strategies for recognizing, responding to, and supporting individuals who may be at risk for or affected by trafficking. Healthcare professionals will review clinical indicators, behavioral signs, communication considerations, reporting referral pathways, and professional responsibilities when responding to suspected trafficking situations. This aligns with the 101 content on definitions, types of trafficking, vulnerable populations, documentation, data limitations, and legislation, and the 201 content on recognizing and responding to human trafficking in healthcare settings.

At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define human trafficking in terms that could affect healthcare.
  2. Recognize the two main types of human trafficking.
  3. Differentiate between human trafficking and human smuggling.
  4. Discuss risk factors for being trafficked.
  5. Identify vulnerable populations and risk factors.
  6. Discuss the importance of appropriate documentation of human trafficking.
  7. Discuss limitations of human trafficking data.
  8. List key legislation impacting human trafficking.
  9. Define human trafficking and recognize how victims may come into contact with healthcare professionals.
  10. Learn to identify potential human trafficking victims in a clinical setting.
  11. Identify promising practices for assisting a patient who may be a potential trafficking victim.
  12. Apply an interprofessional, traumainformed approach to recognize, document, communicate, and coordinate appropriate referral or response for patients who may be at risk for or affected by human trafficking.
