Overview
This live activity will address the role of chaplaincy in team-based care, communication, and wellness support. The session will help healthcare professionals understand when and how to include chaplains as part of the care team to support patients, families, colleagues, and trainees during difficult diagnoses, grief, emotional distress, burnout, and challenging conversations. The activity will also provide practical communication strategies for recognizing when a colleague or trainee may be struggling, responding with care, and connecting individuals with appropriate wellness resources.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe the role of chaplaincy as part of the healthcare team in supporting patients, families, colleagues, and trainees during grief, distress, burnout, difficult diagnoses, and challenging conversations.
  2. Apply teambased communication strategies to recognize distress, respond with care, and connect patients, families, colleagues, or trainees with chaplaincy and wellness resources.
  3. Discuss ethical and professional responsibilities related to recognizing distress, maintaining appropriate boundaries, responding compassionately, and connecting patients, families, colleagues, and trainees with appropriate support resources.
  4. Develop a strategy to teach trainees when to recognize distress, how to respond supportively, and how to use chaplaincy and wellness resources within teambased care.
